Semaglutide in 2026: read the product, not just the ingredient
By Peppy Care · Published · Updated
The short answer
Semaglutide appears in distinct approved products; the exact label determines indication, population, warnings, and formulation.
Start with the named product
“Semaglutide” alone does not tell you which finished medicine is proposed. The June 2026 DailyMed Wegovy label describes injection and tablet presentations with product-specific indications. It includes weight-management uses for defined adults and adolescents, cardiovascular risk reduction in a defined adult population, and an injection indication for certain adults with noncirrhotic MASH and fibrosis. These are not general approvals for every semaglutide preparation or every patient with liver disease. DailyMed: Wegovy current label
Read indication boundaries
FDA’s MASH announcement identifies a specific Wegovy indication in adults with moderate-to-advanced fibrosis. The label says that indication received accelerated approval based on improvement in MASH and fibrosis, with confirmatory clinical benefit still to be verified. That nuance matters more than a broad “liver health” claim. Ask the clinician which diagnosis and product presentation they are discussing. FDA: Wegovy MASH approval
Read risks and follow-up
The product label contains contraindications, warnings, interactions, and patient instructions; a clinician must interpret those with the patient’s other conditions and medicines. NIDDK explains that weight-management medication decisions involve medical history and ongoing lifestyle care. Trial averages cannot predict one person’s response. Do not use a product article to choose a dose or alter another medicine. DailyMed: Wegovy current label NIDDK: Prescription medicines for weight management
Keep regulatory categories separate
FDA warns that compounded semaglutide preparations are not FDA-approved and can pose specific labeling, shipping, and dosing concerns. An approved Wegovy study does not establish quality or effectiveness of a different compounded formulation. Ask for the exact finished product and why it is appropriate. Confirm product availability, clinician eligibility, and dispensing arrangements with the service before assuming a particular presentation can be prescribed in your location. Why the route matters
The current Wegovy label includes injection and tablet presentations. Injection includes weight reduction in eligible adolescents and treatment of noncirrhotic MASH with moderate-to-advanced fibrosis in adults; the tablet’s listed uses are weight reduction and cardiovascular risk reduction in adults. Read the section for the exact presentation before repeating a claim about heart or liver outcomes. A clinician may also use a different semaglutide brand for a different indication. The ingredient name alone cannot tell a patient which evidence, warnings, or instructions apply to the dispensed product. DailyMed: Wegovy current label
A useful visit question
Ask, “Which diagnosis and labeled indication are we treating with this exact product, and what outcome will we monitor?” If the answer is weight management, cardiovascular risk reduction, or MASH, the supporting trials and eligibility differ. Also ask how the clinician will address adverse effects, other medicines, and treatment continuity. For a proposed compounded medicine, request a separate explanation of why an approved product cannot meet the medical need. FDA: Concerns with unapproved GLP-1 drugs
Frequently asked questions
Are all semaglutide products approved for the same uses?
No. Approval and labeling attach to specific products and presentations; check the exact one prescribed.
Does the MASH indication apply to all liver disease?
No. FDA describes a defined population with noncirrhotic MASH and moderate-to-advanced fibrosis.
Does Wegovy evidence prove a compounded product works the same way?
No. FDA has not reviewed a compounded preparation as the approved finished product.
